My story: In front of the lens

Written by Vanessa Leigh, stylist

When was the last time you had your photo taken? In the age of the selfie, it’s common for this to be a daily occurrence with a camera in our hand at most times. So why have a professional portrait taken? A portrait is more than a quick snapshot, it’s a timeless investment in yourself, telling the story of who you are and the journey you’ve traveled.

Recently, I had the opportunity to embark on this transformative journey, and it was an incredible experience. Entering Klik Photography is like entering another world; the portraits hanging on the walls are rich in colour and detail, drawing you into their story.

Inspiration through teamwork

As a stylist I am always looking for opportunities to collaborate with other creatives and, taking a chance, I asked Sami if he would be interested in working together. Ideas sparked as we shared the same enthusiasm for our work, agreeing there would be great opportunities in working together. Sami then suggested taking some photos of me to showcase our process. In truth, I hesitated.

I like being on the other side of the camera, supporting others in front of the lens. Like most people, I have a standard pose as a reaction to having a camera in front of me so I don’t feel as awkward. Through discussion, I was reassured that Sami really knows his craft, as we talked about lighting, backdrops and artistic vision – portraits are his specialty for a reason.

Sami guided me through a process that really made me think about who I am and what parts of me I wanted to express through photography. He took the time to understand my vision, style, and personality because he knows that is where the captivating portrait lies, reflecting the true essence of someone.

Discussion guided by creativity

Preparation for the photoshoot was very detailed, discussing wardrobe, props, poses and working through examples of lighting and backdrops. I brought in several outfits to show Sami how they would work with the style of photos I had in mind.  I wanted to include many of my favourite pieces of clothing to capture the memories and the stories they told.

Through dance and stage performances, I fell in love with creative dressing and costumes and learned how to combine some of these elements into my clothes to design a wardrobe that I felt truly connected to.  To bring these ideas into the photos, I chose fabrics with beautiful colours, patterns and movement. We worked through each outfit choice and Sami talked about how the background and lighting would change to suit each.

Being in front of the camera was initially intimidating, but Sami created a relaxed and comfortable environment to put me at ease. Offering gentle guidance and encouragement throughout the session, I was able to feel confident, relaxed, and natural in front of the lens also taking some risks in the hope of creating photos that I could truly resonate with.

What got me here?

A lifelong love of fashion led me to becoming a stylist. I’ve always been shy and realised at a young age the benefits of dressing as an immediate form of expression and communication. I love the transformative effects of clothing; in an instant you can change your image and boost your confidence, wearing colours, styles and prints that reflect you and bring out your personality.

I love working as a stylist on photoshoots as it gives me an opportunity to show a client how simple changes to their dress can have stunning results. I encourage my clients to try pieces they wouldn’t normally consider, allowing the discovery of new silhouettes, colors, and textures that compliment their personality.

Experience the collaboration

In preparation for a photoshoot, I work closely with clients to discuss outfits to match their vision and if needed we shop or I source special items.  I also have racks of clothes and accessories to offer clients, and  I will ensure each outfit is complete from head to toe, ensuring clothing, jewelry, accessories, footwear and props all work beautifully together to create an image that they will love and enjoy reflecting on.

Having a photographer and stylist working together on your photoshoot can make a big difference. A stylist is focused on ensuring hair, clothing and accessories sit well in each pose, troubleshooting any wardrobe malfunctions that may arise, ensuring every frame is picture-perfect.

If you are considering having your photo taken, I highly recommend Sami and his team at Klik to create a masterpiece. Even if you feel shy having your photo taken, consider the benefits of having a beautiful photo that represents this part of your life. Do it for your future self – they will be thankful!
