Below is information about the requirements for the most common visa photos and instructions for applying for visas.
USA visa
There are many different types of visas for the United States depending on the purpose of the trip, such as business travel/tourism and transit. The applicant must complete the DS-160 visa application form online before the interview at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate. During the submission process, the applicant must upload a photo file no more than six months old. A paper photo should be brought to the interview.

- Pay the visa fee.
- Schedule an interview at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
- Attend the interview.
- If your visa is approved, it will be sent to the delivery location you selected.
USA visa photo requirements
Paper photo: size 50 × 50 mm. Head size 25–35 mm (top of head to chin), eyes 28–35 mm from the bottom of the photo. The background must be white or light-colored with no objects, and the face fully visible.
Digital file: minimum 600 × 600 px, maximum 1200 × 1200 px. Head size 50–70 % of total image height, eyes at 55–70 % height from the bottom. Maximum file size 240 KB.

India visa
For India, you can apply for tourist, business, work, conference, and student visas. The visa is applied for using an online form, which is filled out online, printed, and signed. A 5 × 5 cm color photo with a light, single-colored background is required as an attachment. The height of the face should be about half the total height of the photo.
India visa application instructions
- Visa type depends on the purpose of the trip.
- Apply up to 8 weeks before travel — at the latest four weeks before travel.
- Fill out the online form on the Indian Embassy website.
- Print and sign the form. Attach a 5 × 5 cm color photo.
- Applications with attachments will not be returned — provide copies and keep the originals.
General document requirements
- Visa application form filled out online, printed and signed
- Passport valid for at least six months on the date of travel, with at least two blank spreads
- One color photo (5 × 5 cm) attached to the application form
- Non-Finnish and Estonian citizens: a copy of a valid residence permit
- Minors: informal written permission from both parents (in English)

China visa
When applying for a Chinese visa, you must book an appointment and complete the application at the Chinese Visa Application Center >>. The Chinese visa photo is made in size 3.3 × 4.8 cm with a white background. Note that jewelry, thick-rimmed glasses, and white shirts are prohibited in the photo.
China visa photo requirements
Paper photo: height 48 mm, width 33 mm. Head height 28–33 mm, width 15–22 mm. White background; eyes, eyebrows and ears must be visible.
Digital photo: 354 × 472 px, face centered at 191–251 px width, 10–70 px between the top edge and the top of the head, eyes at 256 px height. File size 40–120 KB.

The Chinese Embassy registers fingerprints from visa applicants (exceptions include applicants under 14 or over 70 and holders of diplomatic passports).
Russia visa
There are many different types of visas for Russia, such as tourist and business visas. For the application you will need a passport valid for at least six months after the trip, a Russian tour operator, your travel route, and travel insurance valid in Russia. Work and student visas also require an HIV certificate no more than three months old.
Russia visa photo requirements
The visa photo must be printed on photo paper — scanned images are not accepted. The face must be fully visible with a neutral expression and a white or light background. The photo size is 3.5 × 4.5 cm, and the photo is glued to the visa application.
